It seems as though time has blurred together - where it was once March, we’re suddenly finding ourselves in a brand new year and slightly worse for wear. But it isn’t as dire as it appears on the surface. Many of us sheltering in place have found solace in a solid self-care routine. And with roll-outs on the vaccine, there’s a light at the end of an otherwise long and dark tunnel.
One thing is for certain, 2020 changed our beauty and self-care routines, and in venturing into 2021, brands whose core offerings were beauty and now emphasizing wellness to consumers are the most well-positioned to thrive in a post-pandemic society. According to McKinsey & Company: “For prestige brands, we see 55 and 75 percent declines in cosmetic and fragrance purchasing, respectively, versus a year ago”, and conversely those brands that emphasize self-care have been faring well “by contrast, skin-care, hair-care, and bath-and-body products appear to be benefiting from self-care and pampering trends.”
Considering e-commerce is the preferred route for consumers to make their purchases in the most safe manner, McKinsey findings states that results from Amazon show consistency in these trends as well. “The US showed declines in makeup sales this year versus last year - while haircare, hair coloring, DIY, and self-care items are way up.”
Additionally, the beauty and wellness spheres are overlapping more than ever - and the pandemic only accelerated this phenomenon: people are prioritizing these aspects into their daily routines. McKinsey adds that “even before the pandemic, the definition of ‘beauty’ was becoming more global, expansive, and intertwined with individuals’ sense of well-being. The COVID-19 crisis is not likely to change these trends...”
With that in mind, here are the best nourishing beauty and wellness products to integrate into your rejuvenating reset year of 2021.
